Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) are an affordable and effective option to extend the space of a home and enhance its value. In the current scenario, an ADU not only functions as a living unit but also serves the following:
- Earn rental income to help pay the mortgage
- Provide an adjacent yet isolated place for children or aging parents
- Serve as a home office, an artist’s studio, a game room, or a “man cave”
- Increase the property’s resale value
ADUs are also known by many other names: granny unit, granny flat, in-law unit, in-law cottage, mother-in-law apartment, sidekick home, laneway home, backyard guesthouse, backyard cottage, or secondary dwelling unit.
Earlier, strict permit procedures and burdensome code requirements kept this dream from becoming a reality. However, many of these regulations have recently been lifted.
